Wow...I never really thought about that.  When I take mine out of it's holster, I always do it with a VERY firm grip, especially while there are rounds in it.  I always drop the mag and take the round out of the chamber before taking that grip off the gun (with finger straight obviously).  But I will be even more careful to do it after reading that.  I wonder if that is what happened.

As stated above. I have dropped a gun a few times over the years. Sometimes it just happens.

But when you have a gun with a trigger like an M&P, Glock, XD, etc... You do NOT try to catch that sucker. It's way too easy to have your hand or finger catch the trigger in the "catch" attempt.

While we're on the topic, has anyone ever had an AD from a dropped gun, or at least witnessed one? I know they happen, just wondering exactly how often they happen.

I will be sure to never drop my gun, but even more sure to not try and catch it if I do.  If I didn't know any better, i'd think Glocks were surely succeptible to AD if dropped.  But considering the striker isn't even under tension until the trigger's slack has been pulled, there is no way a Glock can misfire from being dropped, unless dropped from a pretty high distance.  The thing about catching and accidentally pulling the trigger.....is something I never even remotely considered.  Glad I read this thread.

I knocked my Px4 off my dresser one time.  It does happen. I rearranged my stuff so that it sits all alone from there out. Lol.

I can easily see the "tried to catch it and an AD followed". Makes a lot more sense and is easier to see that happening.

I'm of the opinion that the most probably cause was that he was showing her his gun and dropped it and tried to catch it.
It's awful hard to fight the impulse to catch anything you drop, even worse when it is a new shiny object likely worth somewhere from $300 to $1000.

My friend almost learned that lesson the hard way when his Sig fell as he was walking on a driveway.  He managed to catch it inches before it hit the ground but also quickly realized one of his fingers was in the trigger guard with the muzzle pointing back at him.  I'm sure he'll never do that again.

That really sucks. I'm not sure what to think of the story, but if it was truly an accident then more's the shame.

I only ever handle my guns to oil them every once in a while, or when we're going shooting (which is unfortunately quite rare). Therefore we're not usually at risk for them falling off high things because they're always in storage, empty. The one thing we DO keep loaded is the home defense shotgun, and it's law that everyone tip-toe around it regardless of whether it's empty or not (it's usually empty with one in the magazine, several on the butt stock shell caddy, and the thumb safety engaged).

I'll definitely have to remember to be more careful when I get my CHL. I wouldn't be able to live with myself shooting ANYONE accidentally because I dropped my gun.

Yup, that'll leave an impression for sure.

I'm actually very fortunate as I use to play hacky sack a lot as a teen so my reflex is to try to catch anything I drop with my foot..lol
(course this isn't good for the gun since it probably won't be caught and will just be kicked across cement furthering the damage to it)

In the Army they no longer consider anything caused by the person to be a Negligent Discharge (ND). It is only a AD if it caused by a weapon malfunctions.
