job question
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:44:52 PM »
how long should you wait before emailing a company back or calling after an interview? This isnt like the petty retail jobs ive had before like at zumiez or sports authority, this is with industry professionals.

IMHO, a couple days.  I would keep it real short though.

I think I'd wait a week...

U just had the interview yesterday, right? I did some hiring recently, and it was down to 2 people. I took the weekend to consider which way I wanted to go, and then decided that following Monday

This question is like when you call back a girl after the first date, no right answer. When I hire people I always prefer prompt follow-up, not days or week(s). I usually make my choices pretty quickly so those that wait don't get a good shot.

It depends.  One of the questions you should have asked was what is their time frame for filling that position or make a decision.  Or would there be any additional rounds of interviews taking place after this session.  I think a follow up a week later would be appropriate if you haven't heard anything back from them.  Kinda like a courtesy follow up and whether they had any additional questions or need you to provide anything else and btw are you going to hire me question.  Also it's best to touch base wtih the guy that's actually doing the hiring and not HR or other gate keepers in the company.  That guy should be able to give you the are you in our out discussion.

An email response thanking them for taking the time to give you the interview can be done as soon as you get home from the interview. Don't ask if you got the job in this email, just thank them for their time. Then I would wait at least a week before any further communication.

24hrs after interview.  email thanking them for the time to discuss how you could help further their company goals.  Fluffy happy excited shit in this email.  Not quite gushing like a little girl but you know what I mean.

5 or 6 business days later, follow up email and include that you are excited at the prospect of working there flower fluffy crap some more about wanting to help them exceed the company goals and standards and stuff.  All that happy go lucky begging for a job hippy stuff.

If you couldn't tell I don't interview for jobs well.   I take a much more direct approach if I have to interview.  This is what I know and can do now what are you willing to pay.   Interviews with me are short, sweet and directly to the point.

Yeah, I pretty much interview the same way. "This is what I know, this is what I can do and this is how much money I expect". Then I start interviewing the company. I'll start asking questions about benefits, vacation, profit sharing, what's your turnover rate and stuff like that.
But, I've never been to an interview while I was unemployed either. I've always been in a situation where I had a job and was looking for a better one. I am fortunate enough to be in a job market where the demand is greater than the supply. There aren't a lot of seasoned tool & die maker/designer/manager/engineer type people around.

The comment that I made earlier about the thank you email and the inquiry a week later is based on what I see when I am interviewing prospective employees.

I am pretty much in the same situation.  I have had folks call me saying they had work for me since they heard I wasn't happy where I was or what I was doing was winding down.  Its kind of nice to have that happen with the way the economy is.

The concensus seems to be about a week, which I agree with as well.  I would get back with them on Thurs or Fri of next week.  If you don't mind me asking, what postion were you interviewing for?

This question is like when you call back a girl after the first date,

Who needs to call?  After my first dates I always just shook their shoulder and told them to wake up so I could go to work.

Lmao

Most people are SWAMPED with emails, so a voicemail or a {gasp} hardcopy letter is more likely to make it to the top of their crud pile. I get 200 emails a week at work. I try to delete all I can.

I thought this thread was relevant to my experience today, so I'll post about it here - don't mean to hijack from OP but hopefully it would be helpful for anyone else in a similar situation. Just had a good interview with a company's in-house recruiter. He recommended I review a few other positions that he said I would qualify for and to get back with him about it, and in the mean time he'd set up a meeting with the manager of the department that would be doing the actual hiring. The interview was open-ended though as there was no mention for the time-frame of the next interview.

I think I will wait 24 hours to send an email back to the recruiter to let him know that I have reviewed the other positions and that I would be interested to work in any capacity they would need me in. After all, it would be more about the company I want to work for and that I'm not just applying for a paycheck.

Does that sound about right?

Make sure it is known you are interested in the company and making a career there not just a paycheck. I would suggest that you might pick a position and say this would be the favored one but you are willing to discuss any position they have in mind for you. Don't over reach or under reach on the posisiton i.e. have 5 years or experience and want to be the dept manager or conversely an entry level position.

I would follow up immediately after the meeting, explain how you appreciate their time and the opportunity to sit down with them for an interview. Then like a week later follow up again regarding their decision.

This is probably too late to matter though...
